Your assignment is to write a condensed version of the narrative, or basic story, of your group's civil rights history. In other words, describe the story in general. Here is an example of a narrative that I wrote for Asian Americans:

Asian Americans had a minimal role in the early part of United States history. In the 1800s, however, significant numbers of Asian immigrants moved to the western US. Many of these were men from China who found work building railroads. Asian Americans were victims of a lot of racial violence in the late 1800s and left small towns and rural places to seek safety in numbers in cities. In the 1900s, more Asian Americans from many different countries moved to the US. A major event was the creation of concentration camps for Japanese Americans during World War II. Today, Asian Americans are often stereotyped as a "good minority" and seen as people who value education, work hard, and have good jobs. Overall, the story of Asian Americans has been mostly in the background of American history. In this way, the story of Asian Americans is different from some other minorities, including African Americans. African Americans have been a focus of at least two parts of American history: the Civil War and the 1950s and 1960s Civil Rights Movement. Asian Americans have had no time in American history focused on them, except maybe the time after September 11th, 2001 with wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, two Asian countries.

To write your narrative, you can focus on the beginning of your group's story, the difficulties that your group has encountered, any successes or progress that they have achieved, and their present situation.
